A Designer's Guide to Choosing an Engagement Ring in Dubai

A Designer's Guide to Choosing an Engagement Ring in Dubai

No piece of jewellery carries more expectation than an engagement ring. It has to say something private in a language everyone can read, suit a hand you may know better than your own, and survive daily wear for decades. Here is what I have learned designing them.

Start with the hand, not the stone

Jewellers will talk to you about carats first. I would rather talk about the hand. Long fingers carry elongated stones — ovals, marquises, pears — effortlessly; shorter fingers are flattered by them. Someone who works with their hands needs a lower profile and a protective setting. The most beautiful ring in the shop is the wrong ring if it fights the hand that wears it.

The four Cs, honestly ranked

Cut first, always — it is the only C responsible for fire and light, and no certificate can rescue a poorly cut stone. Colour second, because the eye notices warmth before it notices anything else. Clarity third: most inclusions in a well-chosen stone are invisible without a loupe. Carat last, and without apology — a smaller stone that burns brightly beats a large one that sits flat.

Why commission instead of buy

Dubai has no shortage of jewellery counters. What a bespoke commission offers is different: a ring designed around one specific person — their hand, their style, their story — at a price that goes into design and material rather than retail overhead. It also means the ring exists exactly once, which feels appropriate for what it represents.

The quiet logistics

Allow six to eight weeks from first conversation to finished ring, and do not be afraid of the secret-keeping: sizes can be borrowed from an existing ring, and renders can be approved over a very discreet WhatsApp chat. Proposals have survived worse conspiracies.

When you are ready — even if you are only at the thinking stage — the conversation is where it starts.
